The iPhone is For Sale in China

November 1st, 2009 · 5 Comments · Microsoft, Windows 7, iPhone, iPhone killer

The iPhone has hit the store shelves of China. Apparently the Chinese version does not have WiFi capability.

That’s going to suck.

Without WiFi in it Apple will probably only be able to sell a few hundred million units.

Dammit.

The Windows 7 ad campaign is beyond lame. Apparently real people saying, “I’m a PC, and Windows 7 was my idea.” You have to love the way they pay homage to the “Get a Mac” ads, then go on to say they’ve finally introduced a better knock-off of OS X. Of course they honor Apple’s ads by demonstrating that they don’t get it, and the joke is still on Microsoft.

Here’s the weird thing. The ads openly brag about Windows features that aren’t even new to Windows. All of the features I saw in the ads – wireless connectivity, multiple apps on the desktop – already exist on XP. And they’re beyond old hat on the Mac. If you’re a regular Rip Ragged readers already know all that, but if you just happened by – and you didn’t already know those things – it’s for one of two reasons:

1. You can’t afford the hardware or the version of Windows that will support those features, so it just never came up.

2. You don’t know or care about those features.

That would place you in the target demographic for the ads. Of course, if you go buy a $599 PC with “Windows Home Mostly Disabled Except for the Logo and Burdensome Anti-Piracy Registration Windows and Ten Gigabytes of Crapware” you still won’t know or care about those features and you still won’t be able to afford the version of Windows that supports all of them , “Windows Super Premium with Unobtainium-251 Chumblers, Techron®, and a sparkling drop of Retsyn™”. The good part is you’ll be able to say, “I’m a PC and Windows 7 was my idea.”

The Motorola Droid continues to show up under post titles with the term “iPhone killer” in them.

If you look in the glossary (to the left) you’ll see that the Droid still qualifies as an iPhone killer on RR. There are still no independent reviews of a working prototype, none on store shelves, and of course you can’t buy one yet. I haven’t even seen a photoshopped mock-up anywhere yet, and they’re due to hit the street this week. So the Droid can stay an iPhone killer here for a few more days. After that, it will die quietly and without much notice – just like all the others.

I’ve read that the future of Motorola hinges on the success of the Droid. If you want a preview of that, just look how the Pre is boosting Palm.

Good-bye Motorola.
