How many iPhones did Apple Sell Last Quarter?

I got this question from a headline over on MacDailyNews (motto: A flamewar a day of lasting insignificance.)

I also have the answer.

All of them.

Yesterday my trusty old iPhone 4 went into the front loader in the pocket of my jeans. By the time we knew where it was, it was far too late to save it. My old phone spent yesterday in intensive care. By bed time I had dried it, charged it, and restored the software. The screen was still not perfect, but it was basically functional.

This morning it was dead. Unresponsive. So, ignoring the certainty that I would miss the whole first half of a playoff game and the very real possibility that I would miss the entire Giants-Falcons game, I went to the AT&T store to see if I had an upgrade path to a 4S. As luck would have it, there was one number on my family plan with an upgrade available.

So they were willing to sell me an iPhone 4S. Except there aren’t any. Not at that store. Not at the other store in Kennewick. A phone call to the local Best Buy – nothing. I would have been happy with 16Gb and I would have paid for 64Gb. I didn’t even have a color preference – black, white, who cares?

So the bad news is, I didn’t get a new iPhone today.

The good news is this: You can tell all your financial analyst buddies there’s an easy way to find out how many iPhones Apple sold last quarter. Find out how many they made and multiply by 1.05 or so – because they’re selling them just slightly faster than they can build them.

That explains the new factory in Brazil. The only limiting factor to Apple’s growth seems seems to be manufacturing capacity. That and there are no Tim Cook, Scott Forstall, or Phil Schiller action figures.

Full disclosure: I’m not selling any shares of AAPL this week.
